There are many tools in Wicca to harness and redirect the energy around us. Each tool as a magickal purpose and understanding this purpose will help you to use the tool more effectively.
Wand
A wand is a popular item in Wicca with a number of purposes. It is a great tool for directing energy during a ritual. It is sometimes seen to represent the god or male energy as a phallic symbol. It also represents the element of air although some use it to represent the element of fire.
Cauldron
The Cauldron is a symbol of the Goddess and femininity because it is seen as a womb where life begins. Most use it to represent the element of water, although it is linked to all four elements since you can set it on the ground, fill in with water, heat it with fire, and send steam into the air (Earth, Water, Fire, Air). Some places use a cup instead of a cauldron.
Knife
The knife is generally referred to as a Athame. Not only is it used for cutting, but the direction of energy and manipulation of power. Some use a sword instead of a athame. A athame is double edged and while the tip is pointed, the knife is dull. It is seen as the representation of the phallic symbol and therefore, represents the god. It is linked to the element of fire.
Pentacle
The pentacle, not to be confused with a pentagram, is used as a protective talisman. Most see it as representing the element of earth.
Brooms
Brooms are used to sweep the ceremonial area out before a ritual to get rid of any negative energy. It is a purifier connected to the element of water. It is not uncommon to meet witches with a broom collection.
Censer
The Catholic tradition uses a censer full of incense during mass and Wiccan use it in much the same way. It can either swing from a chain or sit on a table. It represents the element of air and doesn’t have to be anything fancy. It can be burned as a stick, cones, or raw materials placed upon a disc of charcoal.
Bell
A long time ago, bells were used to drive out evil spirits. As they cause vibrations, they are a great source of power. Whether is shaking of a sistrum, ritual rattle, or use of a singing bowl, they all bring harmony to a ritual.
Candles
Candles are very important and it’s hard to imagine a ritual without candles. Sometimes there is a candle to represent the god and another one to represent the goddess. Sometimes it is just simply the element of fire. They can be used to symbolize people, concepts, and emotions.
Book of Shadows
Book of Shadows has been made popular by television shows and movies. It is a notebook of information. They contain information about the gods and goddess, spells, rituals, correspondence charts, myth, legends, and anything else a person wants. Some separate their book of shadows and have grimore too. The book of shadows is used as a personal area, while the grimore is like a cookbook.
